Lake Toba, Indonesia – The inaugural Trail of The Kings (TOTK) Zero Edition impressed with international participation and a positive impact on the region. Held May 4-5, 2024, in Samosir Regency, the event attracted 736 runners from 12 countries, exceeding expectations.

The scenic race offered categories for all levels, from beginner-friendly Fun Runs (5K and 10K) to challenging Trail Runs (27K and 50K). The 27K and 50K distances aim for Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB) World Series inclusion, with the presence of UTMB’s Asian Head of Operations adding weight to the aspiration.

Running Through History and Beauty

Participants traversed stunning landscapes within the Toba Caldera Geopark, encountering mountains, lakes, rivers, and traditional villages. The route mirrored the paths of ancient Batak kings and offered breathtaking views of Mount Pusuk Buhit, a significant site in Batak mythology.

Positive Feedback and Community Impact

The event garnered enthusiastic praise from runners worldwide. Organizers highlighted the economic benefits for Samosir communities, with 12 villages involved in providing marshals, food and beverages, and cleaning services.

Beyond the race, participants embraced sustainability efforts like tree planting in Sianjur Mula Mula Village. Elite runners enjoyed cultural experiences such as a traditional dance performance and a local dignitary-hosted dinner.

BPODT Director Jimmy Panjaitan emphasized the event’s contribution to Indonesia’s international event scene, aligning with President Joko Widodo’s vision. The influx of runners and their companions significantly boosted local tourism and spending.
